Plenty Vaporizer

De PLENTY is een niet-draagbare, elektrische vaporizer uit de stal van Storz & Bickel, de makers van de bekende Volcano vaporizers. Onze uitgebreide review lees je hieronder.

Uiterlijk

Een veelgehoorde opmerking over het uiterlijk van de Plenty is dat deze vaporizer qua uiterlijk lijkt op een stuk elektrisch gereedschap - iets waar ik het volledig mee eens ben. Het zwarte en oranje plastic, tezamen met het grote handvat zorgen ervoor dat je bij het zien van de Plenty eerder aan de nieuwste Black en Decker sloopboor denkt dan een geavanceerde vaporizer. Dankzij deze industriele look zal de Plenty niet opvallen in je schuur of garage, maar des te meer in de huiskamer. Laten we het erop houden dat ik meer had verwacht van het bedrijf wat verantwoordelijk is voor de Volcano, welke er met z'n glanzende kap toch wel een stuk slicker uit ziet. Het geeft de Plenty wel weer een robuust tintje mee, en laten we hopen dat dat ook zo is.

De verpakking van de Plenty is trouwens vrijwel gelijk aan de vierkante dozen van de Solid en Easy valve onderdelen. Het ziet er allemaal netjes en verzorgd uit, en ook de handleiding is duidelijk.

Damp en smaak

Belangrijker dan het uiterlijk (voor mij althans), is de kwaliteit en smaak van de damp. Hier kan ik kort over zijn: hier is weinig op aan te merken. Vrijwel direct na het opwarmen (wat zo'n 2-3 minuten duurt) voorziet de Plenty je van smaakvolle en krachtige dampwolken. Je kunt de temperatuur verstellen om mildere of juist vollere damp te verkrijgen. Bij hogere temperaturen is de damp extreem potent en wat zwaarder op de keel.

Er zijn geen nare bijsmaakjes van gebruikte materialen te bekennen. Het lijkt erop dat de slang en bowl uit roestvrij staal bestaan. De gedraaide slang (coil) doet z'n werk prima: de damp wordt goed afgekoeld. De Plenty beschikt tevens over een goede airflow, waardoor het inhaleren van grote hits zonder problemen mogelijk is.

Efficiëntie

Net zoals bij de Volcano het geval is, neight de temperatuur van de Plenty richting de voorzichtige kant. Zelfs bij hogere temperaturen kleurt de wiet na gebruik lichtbruin van kleur. Dit in tegenstelling tot veel andere vaporizers, waar vaak voor hoge temperaturen gekozen kan worden en waarbij de kruiden na verdamping donkerbruin van kleur zijn. Dit is dus niet het geval bj de Plenty, maar dat lijkt gelukkig niet ten koste te gaan van de efficiëntie. Daarnaast ga ik er van uit dat de temperatuurweergave vrij accuraat is, wat zou betekenen dat de meeste werkzame stoffen benut worden.

Lagere temperaturen (170-180°C) zorgen voor voldoende hitte om een lekkere smaak te behouden. Na een paar hits zet ik de temperatuur iets hoger, 190 a 200°C, om de bowl leeg te maken. Zelfs op de hoogste temperatuur is er absoluut geen sprake van verbranding.

Wat me wel opviel is dat de wiet relatief gezien sneller verbruikt lijkt te worden dan bij andere vaporizers het geval is. Ik vermoed dat dit te maken heeft met de airflow en het grotere contactoppervlakte. Oftewel, je hoeft minder lang te verdampen voor hetzelfde effect.

Gebruiksgemak

De Plenty is vrij eenvoudig in gebruik. Je doet de stekker in het stopcontact, drukt op de ronde knop om hem aan te zetten en kiest dan de gewenste temperatuur middels de schuifknop aan de zijkant. Het is even wachten tot de vaporizer is opgewarmd, wat afhankelijk van de gekozen temperatuur zo'n 3 tot 5 minuten duurt. Wanneer de vaporizer aan staat brandt een oranje lampje. Erg handig, zodat je ook minder snel zal vergeten om hem na gebruik weer uit te schakelen.

De bowl van de Plenty is vrij ruim: er past zeker een halve gram in. Het vullen vergt wel wat oplettendheid. Omdat de Plenty is ontworpen als handheld vaporizer zul je hem tijdens gebruik regelmatig op de zijkant leggen. Hierdoor is het nodig om de bowl bijna volledig te vullen, om verschuiven van de inhoud te voorkomen. De lucht stroomt dan langs de zijkant, en de verdamping is op die manier verre van optimaal. Dit staat ook vermeld in de handleiding (en is verduidelijkt met een diagram) maar ik kan me voorstellen dat dit voor problemen zorgt bij gebruikers. Immers wil niet iedereen direct een halve gram wiet (of ander kruid) gebruiken voor een sessie. Om dit op te lossen wordt ook een roestvrij stalen dik gaasje meegeleverd, wat als opvulling dient en er minder vulling nodig is. Dit lijkt voldoende te werken en de damp blijft van dezelfde kwaliteit, maar het is wel iets wat je moet weten voor gebruik.

Uit ergonomisch oogpunt kost het wel wat moeite om aan de Plenty te wennen. Wellicht komt dit door de totaal andere manier van hanteren dan alle andere soorten vaporizers die ik tot nu toe heb gebruikt. Zo is het niet mogelijk om de Plenty rechtop neer te zetten, en kwam ik er pas later achter dat dit ook niet de bedoeling is. Zo is een van de zijdes namelijk voorzien van een paar rubberen dopjes welke bescherming bieden tijdens het horizontaal neerleggen van de vaporizer. Een ander nadeel van het op de zijkant plaatsen is dat de Plenty op deze manier behoorlijk wat tafelruimte opeist.

Duurzaamheid

Door de industriële look ziet de Plenty er robuust uit, en dat is hij ook. Het plastic is stevig en krasbestendig. Ik durf wel te stellen dat de Plenty een val van tafel of stoelhoogte zou kunnen overleven. Dit is dan ook direct een van de grote voordelen van het ontbreken van glazen onderdelen in deze vaporizer. Met de juiste zorg moet de Plenty jaren trouwe dienst kunnen leveren. De Volcano vaporizers staan bekend om hun duurzaamheid en hoge kwaliteit, en wat dat betreft past de Plenty daar prima tussen.

Eindoordeel

Over sommige zaken ben ik meer te spreken dan andere, maar over het algemeen is de Plenty een uitstekende vaporizer. De kwaliteit van de damp laats niets te wensen over en het apparaat is eenvoudig in gebruik. Door heel lichtjes te inhaleren tover je zonder problemen volle dampwolken tevoorschijn, iets wat bij andere vaporizers soms de nodige kracht van je longen vergt.

De grote inhoud van de bowl (vulkamer) zorgt ervoor dat je een behoorlijke tijd kunt dampen zonder je hier druk om hoeft te maken is ook een voordeel, met name wanneer je met meerdere mensen aan het verdampen bent. Wellicht dat de naam hier op is geïnspireerd? Voor diegenen die de Plenty alleen gebruiken is hij dan ook minder geschikt, mede vanwege het de aparte manier van neerzetten en vasthouden. Het is een echte party vaporizer, die je als een joint kan doorgeven.

Al met al is deze nieuwe vaporizer vooral geschikt voor feestjes en grootverbruikers. Ik ben niet echt weg van het uiterlijk, maar dit verschilt uiteraard per individu. Zoek je een degelijke en efficiente elektrische vaporizer, en wil je zo weinig mogelijk hoeven te 'herladen'? Dan is de Plenty momenteel een prima keuze.

The PLENTY is a non-portable vaporizer that was designed and manufactured by the makers of the infamous Volcano vaporizers, Storz & Bickel.

Aesthetics

Like most others, my first impression of the Plenty is that it resembles a power tool. The black and orange plastic, plus the large handle, give it the appearance of an electric drill. It looks quite industrial, and wouldn't be out of place on a construction site, workshop or a garage! Some people like it, while others might find it ugly. When I first saw the Plenty, I was a little disappointed it didn't have the minimal, stainless steel appearance of the Volcano (from the same company). I think the orange and black plastic makes it look a little cheap, and the overall look of the product seems a little over-complicated. Its not an object I would put display on a shelf or coffee table. On the other hand, I can see how some people would like the industrial look (particularly men), and I see why the makers would design it this way. It does make the Plenty look nice and bombproof.

The packaging is almost identical to the square, flat boxes which come with Volcano bags. The Plenty is well protected inside the box, and all the pieces fit nicely into their own places. The presentation is good, with the instruction manual right on top. The instruction manual is very detailed, clear and well designed. The outside of the box is quite flashy, with full-color logos and pictures of the Plenty on all sides.

Vapor & Taste

The quality of the vapor is good, with thick & tasty hits right from the start. The temperature control means you can dial in the Plenty to produce thinner vapor, or thick, coughy vapor. At the higher temperature settings, the vapor can be extremely potent. I don't taste any unwanted flavours from the materials used in the device. From what I can tell, the bowl and whip are all stainless steel. The coiled whip does quite a good job of cooling down the vapor. The Plenty has a very good airflow, so you can get large hits very easily, without much drag.

Efficiency

Like the Volcano, the heat of the Plenty is on the gentle side - even on higher temperature settings, the herb tends to finish up a golden brown color. This is unlike many other vaporizers, which can turn the herb to a dark chocolate brown. Although the Plenty doesn't make the herb dark brown, it does seem quite efficient, and I believe the temperature control is accurate, so it should extract most of the goodies.

I like to start on the lower temperatures (around 170 - 180 degrees), which is more than enough heat for the Plenty to produce tasty vapor. After a few hits, I turn the temperature up to around 190 - 200 degrees to finish the bowl. Even on the highest temperature setting, the herb doesn't come close to combustion.

One thing I noticed with the Plenty is that is seems to go through weed quite quickly compared to other vaporizers. I think this is because of the high volume airflow, as well as the large bowl size (explained below).

Ease of use

The basic setup of the Plenty is quite easy. You plug it in, push a switch to turn it on, and then choose a temperature setting. The Plenty will start to warm up, which takes around 5 mins, depending on the temperature chosen. The on/off switch glows orange when its turned on, so its easy to see when the device is active, and helps with remembering to turn it off after a session.

The bowl of the Plenty is quite large (you can fit in a half gram quite easily) and requires a little more care to fill correctly. Because the Plenty is designed to be handheld, it is often tilted sideways while being used. Because of this, its necessary to fill the bowl almost completely - otherwise when the device is tilted, the herb falls down to one side of the bowl, and the air passes around it, instead of through it. This is explained with a diagram in the instruction manual, although I can see that many users could still have trouble with this, especially those who want to use smaller quantities. The Plenty also comes with a stainless steel mesh pad which can be used to fill out the bowl when using smaller amounts, which seems to work well. I couldn't notice any reduction in airflow or vapor quality when using the steel mesh pad. Because of this issue with filling the bowl correctly, I would say there is a slight learning curve to using the Plenty.

Ergonomically, the Plenty does take a little getting used to - I think this is also because its a totally different form to any other vaporizer I've tried. At first, I couldn't work out how to put it down in-between hits, because it doesn't stand up on its own. After some use I noticed that one side has a few small rubber pads, and that it was designed to be laid down on its side when not in use. This works ok, but it does feel a little awkward somehow. When laid sideways, the Plenty takes up quite a lot of room on your table. But again, I think its just something to get used to, because this is a different kind of vaporiser, which isn't really designed to sit on a table. When used sitting on a couch, the Plenty does sit nicely on your lap.

Durability

The industrial look of the Plenty does make it seem quite durable. The plastic feels very hard, and high quality. I think the Plenty could survive a small drop (eg. chair height) without damage, but dropping it from standing height could crack the shell. Overall, the Plenty is designed for long-lasting durability, and should last a very long time if looked after. The manufacturer already has a good reputation from the Volcano, which are well known for their longevity. The stainless steel elements such as the bowl seem to be top quality, just like the Volcano.

Conclusion

There are some things I like about the Plenty, and some things I don't like. The vapor quality is very good, and it produces thick hits with very little drag. This is something I like a lot, because many other vaporizers require quite a bit of lung power to get large hits. With the Plenty, you can just breath in to get lots of vapor very quickly. I think the Plenty is a good choice for occasions when you have a few people around, and are sitting on couches, watching a movie, playing games etc.

The large size of the bowl means it can produce a huge amount of vapor before needing refilling - I have the feeling this is where they got the name of the device. It can get a lot of people very high, very quickly! The Plenty is not really the best choice for a solo user, because of the large bowl size, and because the device is physically awkward to deal with in-between hits. However, it is quite good choice for a solo user who wants to vaporize while watching a movie, without needing to reload the bowl.

The visual appearance of the Plenty doesn't really do much for me, but some people might like it. Overall, I think the Plenty is quite a good vaporizer, and it does fill a niche for many users. I can see it would be perfect for parties or groups.
